Hale County was created by the Alabama Legislature on Jan 30, 1867. It was named for Lt. Col. Stephen Fowler Hale, a Confederate Officer from Greene County, killed at Gaines' Mill VA.

Hale County is located in west central Alabama. Much of the newly formed county had been the part of Greene County east of the Black Warrior River. This river is the boundary between Greene and Hale today. The remainder of Hale County was taken from Perry County, Marengo County , and Tuscaloosa County. Hale County also borders Bibb County and many early Hale County residents are in old Bibb County records.

The county seat is Greensboro, Alabama which has a good selection of records since 1867. Prior to that, you will need to check all the parent counties to find your ancestors.
